Golf As Competition With Nature

By Carol Farkas

It is very easy to misconstrue golf apart from other sports. Common people's idea of a sport involved hyperactivity and tough competition. But what they see in the television does not seem to define golf as a "sporty" event, as one may describe it.

It is very easy to misconstrue golf simply because it requires deeper observation how the mechanics work. Unlike other sports, golf does not really highlight the players as it focuses on the scenic golf courses. If one may look at it carefully, golf can be the most complex three-dimensional setting that compels players to heighten their panoramic discernment.

In almost all sports, the venue is one aspect that is always overlooked. In competitive sports the venue has little to do with the conditions of the player's victory or the audience impact. However, the placid natural prairie biome affects not only the player's condition, but rather greatly affects the audience as the solemn venue captivates the naturalist sentiments, an irony to the aggressive nature of most sports.

People are easily convinced that golf is an easy sport to play as far as athleticism goes. However, just because the dynamics and the cadence of the game are not hectic and panic-stricken does not necessarily mean it is not tiresome. Imagine walking through hundreds of yards under the beating sun during competitions right after a very powerful swing.

Common people often mistake strength for simple aerobic hyperactivity or lean muscular physique. It is even amusing how the non-martial nature of golf is often associated for the player's perceived lack of physical shape. However, repetitive swinging of the club against a ball to be thrust for miles into the air develops the muscles in the arms and the abdomen.

If getting the ball off the ground from point A to point B is already quite challenging, getting the ball into the hole is taking the task to the whole new level. Unlike football stadiums or boxing rings, a golf course does not have a plane surface. Therefore, a player's wits and reckoning is put to the test by negotiating with the unalterable slopes and moors.

In golf, the player does not only have to negotiate with the irregularities of the terrain, he or she also needs to consider the quirkiness of the atmosphere. The wind can play a drastic change of outcome after a player's swing. The flight of the ball determines whether the player is closer to or further from victory. No one can control the wind but the wind can always steer the ball's flight wherever it chooses.

The fact that golf is often misconstrued is testament that common perception of mankind misunderstood the true essence of sports. Sporting events and activities are ideally the universal attempt for harmony in a form of competition and test. In the case of golf, such a sport is the understanding of mankind's harmony and connection with nature and its elements.
