Your 6-8 year-old son and/or daughter has just approached you
about learning to play golf. You are not a golfer. You know nothing
about the game. You have to go out and purchase some clubs. There are
thousands of choices. How do you know what to buy? Well, I want to share
with you my suggestions:
First of all, don't go out right away and buy your junior golfer the thousand dollar set of clubs. This is a complete waste of money and simply not necessary. If I were you, I would go out to the local sporting good store and buy the $99 dollar special. Here's why... before you go out and spend a fortune on junior golf clubs, make sure your junior golfer actually likes the game. Have them take some lessons. Go join a First Tee Program. Get them out to the practice range. Why spend all of your hard earned money for clubs, then have them quit six months later.
Once your golfer plays for a season or two, if they are serious about the game, then I would look in to a more advanced set. As a suggestion, I would look online for a used set. Some of the golf sets on eBay are perfectly fine. Let's face it, how many families have junior golfers that outgrow their clubs... thousands upon thousands of families. Again, why buy a new junior set, when you can get a perfectly good one on eBay or at your local golf course for half the cost.
OK, so now your junior golfer is older and about ready to enter high school. They want to play in the local junior tournaments. Now is the time to invest your money. I would visit one of your local stores and have them swing everything available. Let them find a set that is comfortable for them. I think the goal here is to purchase a set that will last them through high school. If your junior golfer is getting serious about golf, they will absolutely need a set of clubs that will allow them to be competitive.
What should you buy? I would look at buying a driver, two woods, a set of irons, and at least three wedge clubs. Your player will need wedge clubs that have different lofts. This is extremely important.
I hope this brief information has been useful. As a parent of a junior golfer, I have been through the process. My intention with this article is to simply share my point of view.
I would encourage you to visit the link below. I have found the information to be very useful.
