By Jake Smith

This guide will help you to understand the rules of golf. It may seem intimidating at first but dont worry we will explain everything you need to know. It will be only a short time until you are comfortable with the rules.

Golf Clubs

It is essential for beginners to learn what type of equipment to use in golf. There is so much variety of clubs on the market that it can be very difficult for beginner golfers to find the one that is ideal for them. When you are looking for the club that is ideal for you, it is important to choose golf clubs that are specifically designed to help you improve your skills. Remember, as a beginner, learning should be your priority, not buying.

You may have up to fourteen clubs in your bag. You dont need this many though when you are starting out. The most important clubs are a driver, putter, sand wedge and 3 other irons. I like the 5, 7 and 9 irons. Later on you may want to buy more clubs as you progress.

When you are looking for the ideal golf clubs, it is important to test the various clubs you are considering. This way you will know for sure that the club you are considering is ideal for you. Another thing you should do when you are shopping for clubs, is to look for clubs that have extra loft. The more loft a club has, the easier it will be for you to get the ball airborne. Also, most golf stores have clubs specifically designed for beginners, it is advised to use these clubs if you are learning how to play this sport.

Choosing your golf balls

You are probably going to loose many golf balls as a beginner. Golf balls can be very expensive so we advise that you buy cheaper balls or use cheaper balls on holes that have a higher risk such as one with water hazards. Brand names don't matter too much but this is up to your personal preference.

Learning How to Become a Golfer

Below is a quick guide to the rules of golf. Since there are so many rules of this rewarding sport, this guide will focus on situations that are commonly encountered. The basic rules are not as hard as most people think, but it is important to regularly review them to avoid any confusion.

Before you tee off you must:

Check that you have the correct number of clubs. The rules are on the score card or near the tee off. Read them. Use a unique ball that you can recognise.

Playing the Ball (Rule Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen, and Fifteen):

If you think a ball is yours but cannot see the identification mark, notify your opponent or marker before you mark the position and lift the ball to identify it. Remember to put the ball back exactly where you picked it up from.If your ball is in a water hazard or bunker, do not touch the water or ground with your club or hand before your down swing. Also, do not move loose impediments. If you play a ball that is not yours then you will lose the hole in match play. In stroke play, you will incur a two stroke penalty and must play the right ball to correct the mistake.

Touching your ball while in play

When this happens on accident from a player, then that player receives a penalty stroke. If the ball is moved by the wind or by its own accord, then there is no penalty.

If a moving ball is obstructed

If you stop a moving ball you will be penalised

Interfering or Assisting Play

You may lift any ball if you think it might interfere with a play. You may lift a ball if you think it may assist a player.

Objects around you

You may move any loose impediments such as leaves, twigs, or loose stones, unless the loose impediments are in the same hazard as your ball. A stroke penalty is incurred if your ball is moved when you move a loose impediment.

You can find your ball

If you lose your ball you have to play another and drop one stroke. You are only given 5 minutes to find your ball

It is important to occasionally review the rules mentioned above. Golf can seem like a complicated game, so it is important to be sure about the various rules. Once you master the basic rules and techniques of this game, you will be able to enjoy golf at a much higher level.
