Wheelchair Golf And Building Confidence

By Brittney Swanson

Wheelchair golf can present many problems to the uninitiated and it is because of this that so many physically challenged players are taking up this age old sport. It presents a means to regain a sense of self confidence especially after having endured an accident of any type rendering an individual physically challenged. It is advisable to peruse some of the sites and to make inquiries as one will soon find and be amazed how this sport has developed.

Despite these handicaps, this is a thriving sport and just as competitive as any other game played on an eighteen hole course around the world. The difference here is that equipment is designed to suit a particular kind of handicap. For example, someone who has lost their playing hand because of amputation is fitted out with clubs either bought or custom made to suit them.

It is not uncommon to find players with handicaps driving around a course in a battery operated golf cart. These carts are specially designed for those who cannot walk but want to enjoy the challenges of this age old sport. It naturally would be very difficult for someone who cannot stand to hit a ball as a golfer who has the use of both his legs and arms.

Buggy carts and other means of transport are designed to act as an extension of a golfer who has no use of his legs or limited use. A shot is played by the player sitting on a seat which is built into the cart in such as manner so that he or she can swing at a ball unobstructed. In this way, a day out on the course becomes a fun day of laughs and naturally disappointments for not having scored that perfect round.

It is these challenges that motivate physically challenged individuals in becoming involved in this age old sport. As any golfer will tell you, technique is everything. From hand placement on the grip of the club, to raising the club on the back swing and finally following through the ball. Physically challenged golfers have taken this challenge a step further and throw in a few of their own unique ideas in order to produce that perfect fade or draw on the ball.

Clubs can be custom made to suit your requirements. However, clubhouses are well equipped with the basics to get you going. This sport presents a means in regaining self confidence and gets people with physical handicaps back into main stream life.

It is difficult to conceive how players manage to get through an eighteen hole golf course at all. It can be almost likened to climbing Mount Everest with no hands. But for people already involved in the game this would be a ludicrous and humorous statement.

Should you never have attempted wheelchair golf it would be advisable to do some investigating first and locate a club nearest your physical location. People who have undergone amputees for whatever reason gravitate to this sport. It affords one the opportunity to socialize and make new friends whilst at the same time presenting a challenge of shooting a good round on one of their many courses located nationwide.
